But tucked away on the south side of Iola sits Lehigh Portland State Park—a 360-acre natural sanctuary built on the rugged bones of a defunct 20th-century industrial cement plant and quarry. Today, it’s home to more than 14 miles of pure, volunteer-crafted trail adrenaline that challenges everything you think you know about Kansas topography.

The Terrain: From Factory Floor to Singletrack Flow
A century ago, this land was heavy machinery, limestone blasting, and industrial rail lines. Today, nature has reclaimed it, leaving behind a mountain biker's playground. The trail system is masterfully split to satisfy every style of rider:
The Technical Singletrack (12.5 Miles): This is where the magic happens. The natural-surface trails weave through dense hardwood forests, open native prairies, and steep, rocky ravines. Because of its quarry past, the dirt is packed with limestone fragments, punchy climbs, and sudden drops.
The "Backbone" Highway (2.5 Miles): Serving as the central artery of the park, this wide, flat, crushed-limestone path utilizes legacy railbeds. It’s the perfect warm-up, a safe spot for family cruises, and seamlessly connects all the aggressive singletrack loops back together.
Know Before You Go
The Wet Weather Rule: The local trail stewards take incredible care of these paths. Because of the dirt composition, local trail etiquette strongly requests staying off the singletrack when it’s wet or muddy to keep from rutting up the hard work. If it rains, stick to the gravel Backbone!
Easy Access: You can drop in from the Western Trailhead right off Washington Avenue (hooking up perfectly with Elm Creek Park South) or use the Eastern Trailhead at 1600th and Nebraska Road.
